A Two-Car Garage Game Room
Roughly 20 by 20 feet, a flat ceiling and no support post. This is the best game room most houses already have.
How these picks were made: from published manufacturer specifications, governing-body standards and the room arithmetic - not from first-hand use. We have not played on these tables. Read the method.

Why a garage beats most basements
- No support post. A garage is a clear span by design. Basements are not.
- No stairs intruding. Nothing eats a corner at table height.
- Square dimensions. Roughly 20 by 20 feet, which suits pool - the only game that needs a square.
- Ceiling height. Usually 8 feet or more with no ducts below it, so a hanging table light works.
- A wide door. Everything gets in easily, which is where basements fail on delivery day.

Three problems to solve before the table arrives
The slope
Garage slabs are poured sloping toward the door for drainage - commonly 1 to 2 inches over the depth. A table will not be level, and leg adjusters have limited range. Check the adjuster range against your measured slope, and plan on shims under the low end.
Measure the slope with a long level or a water level before ordering anything. It is a five-minute job that avoids a very annoying surprise.
The damp
Tape a 2-foot square of plastic sheet to the slab and leave it 48 hours. Condensation underneath means the slab passes moisture, which rules out carpet and matters a great deal for a composite table bed and for wooden cues.
If the slab passes moisture, deal with it - a dehumidifier, a vapor barrier under the flooring - before committing a table to the room. Flooring options here.
The temperature swing
An unconditioned garage swings widely between seasons, and that swing is what warps wooden cues and moves a shuffleboard playfield. A composite table bed, a fiberglass-shafted cue and climate adjusters on a shuffleboard are the three products that respond to it.
Layouts
The committed game room
An 8-foot pool table centered with full cue clearance on all four sides. A 14-foot shuffleboard along one wall - it is only 30 inches wide, so it costs you almost nothing. A dart board on the back wall. Seating against the door wall. The car parks outside.
The shared garage
A folding table tennis table on locking castors, a dart board on the back wall, and an arcade cabinet in the corner. Fold, roll, park. Everything here survives a car coming back in.

What to buy for a garage

#1 · A full-size table
Hathaway Augusta 8 ft Pool Table
A full 8-foot table without slate. If you want tournament geometry and can live without a stone bed, this is the size-first choice.
A two-car garage at 20 by 20 feet takes a full 8-foot pool table with 58-inch cues on every side - which almost no basement manages. Composite bed is the sensible choice in an unconditioned space.
- What works
- Full-size play with full cues
- Composite bed tolerates the environment better than the frame does
- What does not
- Commits the garage; the car moves out

#2 · The slab
Interlocking Rubber Floor Tiles
The garage-floor answer. Rubber takes a dropped dart or a dropped cue and does not telegraph slab cracks the way vinyl plank does.
A bare garage slab is cold, loud and chips a dropped cue tip. Rubber tiles fix all three and tolerate the moisture a slab passes.
- What works
- Tolerant of a damp slab
- Absorbs dropped objects
- No adhesive
- What does not
- Industrial look
- Does not fix an unlevel slab

#3 · Keeping the car
STIGA Advantage Indoor Table Tennis Table
The default family table: a full-size folding indoor table with STIGA's Quickplay assembly, aimed at first-time buyers.
A folding table tennis table on castors is what makes a shared garage work - fold it, roll it against the wall, park. That cycle only survives if one person can fold it.
- What works
- One-person fold
- Rolls on a swept slab
- What does not
- Folded, still a refrigerator-sized object

#4 · Surviving the environment
Fitted Pool Table Cover
Dust is what kills cloth in a garage. A fitted cover is the cheapest item on this site and the one that pays back fastest.
Dust is what kills cloth in a garage. A fitted cover is the cheapest protection available and the one that pays back fastest.
- What works
- Cheap and effective
- What does not
- Only works if it goes on
Method
Garage dimensions are typical US interior figures. All clearance requirements use the same arithmetic as the rest of this site. The slab and damp tests are standard practice rather than measurements we took in any specific garage.
