A One-Car Garage Game Room
Long enough for nearly everything, and about two feet too narrow for a pool table. Here is how that plays out.
How these picks were made: from published manufacturer specifications, governing-body standards and the room arithmetic - not from first-hand use. We have not played on these tables. Read the method.

The dimensions
A typical US single-car garage is about 12 feet wide by 20 feet deep inside, with some at 22 or 24 feet deep. That is a long narrow room with a door at one end, and it behaves exactly like a narrow basement with better ceilings.
| Game | Needs | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| 7 ft pool, 58 in cues | 17 ft 2 in x 13 ft 11 in | No - 2 ft short on width |
| 7 ft pool, 48 in cues | 15 ft 4 in x 12 ft 1 in | Marginal - 12 ft is 1 in short |
| 6.5 ft pool, 48 in cues | 11 ft 2 in x 7 ft 10 in | Yes |
| Full-size ping pong | 17 ft x 10 ft | Yes, lengthwise |
| 12 ft shuffleboard | 16 ft x 5 ft 6 in | Yes, along a wall |
| 7.5 ft air hockey | 11 ft 6 in x 6 ft 6 in | Yes |
| Foosball, telescoping | 56 x 30 in plus standing | Yes |
| Dart board | 11 ft run | Yes |
What to do about the width
- Measure the true clear width at table height, wall face to wall face, including any build-out, shelving or stud framing.
- If it is genuinely 12 ft or more, a 7-foot table with 48-inch cues is possible - and it will be tight on both long rails forever.
- If it is under 12 ft, drop to a 6.5-foot table, which fits with room to spare.
- Or change the game. A 12-foot shuffleboard plus a dart board uses this shape far better than a cramped pool table does.
The garage-specific problems
- The door track. It runs along the ceiling for several feet from the door. Not at table height, but in the path of a table tennis lob.
- The opener. Hangs in the center of the ceiling, often right where a table light would go.
- The slope. 1 to 2 inches toward the door. Check your leg adjusters have the range.
- The water heater. Frequently in a single garage, often in a corner, and it needs service clearance by code - so you cannot build around it.
- The step up to the house. Where the castors have to cross if anything moves.
Two layouts
The lengthwise room
Table tennis down the center, playing toward the door. A dart board on the end wall opposite the door. A 12-foot shuffleboard is an alternative along one wall if the table tennis table can fold away.
The shared garage
A 12-foot shuffleboard along one wall, which is only 30 inches wide and leaves 9 feet 6 inches for a car. A dart board and a countercade on the remaining wall. The car still parks, and the room is still a game room.

What to buy for a single garage

#1 · The best fit
STIGA Advantage Indoor Table Tennis Table
The default family table: a full-size folding indoor table with STIGA's Quickplay assembly, aimed at first-time buyers.
Table tennis played lengthwise down a 20-foot garage is the single best use of this shape. Four feet behind each end, folds against the wall afterwards.
- What works
- Suits the shape exactly
- Folds so the car can come back
- What does not
- Side clearance is tight at 12 ft wide

#2 · A permanent installation
Hathaway Challenger 12 ft Shuffleboard Table
Hathaway lists a 1.5-inch hardwood playfield with climate adjusters and built-in storage, in walnut or dark cherry.
A 12-foot shuffleboard along one wall of a 20-foot garage fits with room at both ends and costs about 30 inches of the width. It is close to the ideal garage game.
- What works
- Uses the length, costs almost no width
- Climate adjusters for the environment
- What does not
- Does not move once installed

#3 · Pool, with short cues
Fat Cat Tucson 7 ft Pool Table
A 7-foot arcade-style table with an automatic ball return, aimed at basements that cannot take a 4-inch slate bed.
A 7-foot table with 48-inch cues needs 12 feet 1 inch of width. A single garage is typically 12 feet - so it fits by an inch on paper and not at all once you allow for a wall stud or a shelf.
- What works
- The game most people want
- Ball return keeps a tight game moving
- What does not
- Width is on the edge - measure before committing
- Short cues on the long rails permanently
Skip it if: your garage is 11 feet 6 inches or anything has been built out from a wall. It will not work.

#4 · A table against a wall
Garlando G-500 Foosball Table
Telescoping rods with chromium plating. The telescoping design is what lets it sit closer to a wall than a through-rod table.
In a 12-foot width, a through-rod foosball table in the middle wastes the room. Telescoping rods let it sit against a wall.
- What works
- No side clearance needed
- What does not
- Damped feel
Method
Garage dimensions are typical US interior figures. Clearance requirements use the same arithmetic as the rest of this site. Measure your own clear width at table height - garages vary more than the typical figures suggest.
