Pool Table Weight and Floor Support

The floor is rarely the problem. The stairs almost always are.

How these picks were made: from published manufacturer specifications, governing-body standards and the room arithmetic - not from first-hand use. We have not played on these tables. Read the method.

Can your floor take it?

In almost every case, yes. The reason is that the load spreads: an 800-pound table standing on six to eight legs across 40 square feet of floor produces a distributed load of around 20 pounds per square foot. Residential floors are typically designed for 40 pounds per square foot of live load. A crowded party in the same room puts more load on the floor than the table does.

What is worth checking is the point load under each leg and the span beneath it. A slate table sitting across the middle of a long, unsupported joist span on an upper floor is a different proposition from the same table over a basement slab or near a bearing wall. If the table is going above ground floor and it is slate, the right move is a short conversation with a structural engineer or a builder - not an internet argument.

The stairwell and route measurement

  1. Measure the narrowest doorway on the route, frame to frame, not wall to wall.
  2. Measure the stair width and - critically - the diagonal across any landing where the stairs turn.
  3. Measure the headroom above the stairs. A low soffit makes a tall carry impossible even when the width is fine.
  4. A slate section is roughly 3 ft by 4 ft and 1 inch thick, and it does not flex at all. It must pass every one of those points on its diagonal.
  5. If any point fails, the table is composite, or it is not going in that room.

Garages, slabs and the other failure mode

A garage slab carries any table trivially, but it is rarely level and it is almost never flat. Expect to shim the legs significantly, and expect to re-level after the first season as the slab moves. Leg levelers with a decent range of adjustment are worth prioritizing on any table going on a slab.

In a garage the other weight problem is that the table cannot be moved easily, so whatever else uses the space loses. The garage layout page covers that trade-off.

How this was assessed

Weight ranges are the figures manufacturers publish across common home tables; the distributed-load arithmetic is simple division you can repeat. Nothing here is a substitute for a structural opinion on a specific floor, and we do not offer one.

Questions people actually ask

How much does a pool table weigh?
A composite 7-footer is typically 250 to 400 pounds; a three-piece slate 8-footer is 700 to 900 pounds, with each slate section around 150 to 180 pounds on its own.
Can you put a slate pool table upstairs?
Often yes, because the load spreads across the legs to roughly 20 pounds per square foot against a typical 40 pound design load. The questions worth asking a professional are the joist span beneath it and the point load under each leg - and separately, whether the slate can get up the stairs.
Will a pool table damage a wooden floor?
The leg feet can dent softwood and the table will not be moved for years, so expect marks. Felt pads or load-spreading pucks under each foot are cheap and solve it.
Do I need to reinforce my basement floor?
Almost never - a basement floor is usually a concrete slab on grade. What a slab does need is leg levelers with real range, because slabs are rarely flat.
How many people does it take to move a pool table?
A composite table: two, after disassembly. A slate table: a professional crew, because each slate section is a careful two-person lift and the leveling afterwards is a skilled job.
