Ping Pong Table Dimensions and Room Size
The table is 9 by 5 feet. The room needs to be a lot more than that, and here is exactly how much.
How these picks were made: from published manufacturer specifications, governing-body standards and the room arithmetic - not from first-hand use. We have not played on these tables. Read the method.

The table
| Measurement | Metric | Imperial |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 2.74 m | 9 ft 0 in |
| Width | 1.525 m | 5 ft 0 in |
| Height from floor | 76 cm | 2 ft 6 in |
| Net height | 15.25 cm | 6 in |
| Net overhang each side | 15.25 cm | 6 in |
The room
Table tennis is played behind the baseline, not over it. A rally at any real pace has both players a meter or more back from the end of the table, which is why the room requirement is so much larger than the table.
| Standard | End space | Side space | Total room |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tight but playable | 3 ft | 2 ft | 15 ft x 9 ft |
| Practical home minimum | 4 ft | 2 ft 6 in | 17 ft x 10 ft |
| Comfortable | 5 ft | 3 ft | 19 ft x 11 ft |
| Club standard | 8 ft | 5 ft | 25 ft x 15 ft |
| International competition | ~15 ft | ~9 ft | ~46 ft x 23 ft |
How to measure your room properly
- Measure the clear floor at table height, about 2 ft 6 in - that is where the obstructions matter.
- Measure along the centreline the table will occupy, not the longest dimension in the room.
- Subtract anything that projects: the stair stringer, the support post, a door at full swing, a chest freezer.
- Check ceiling height: a lob goes up. Under about 8 feet you lose the lob entirely, which is a real part of the game.
- Check the light fixture position. A pendant hanging over the middle of the table is directly in the ball's path.
If the room is too small
- Play lengthwise in a narrow room. A 20 by 11 foot room is a far better table tennis room than a 14 by 15 one, because the length is where the game happens.
- Put one end against a wall and play one-sided practice or short games. Not ideal, but usable.
- Use a mid-size table. Honestly labeled mid-size tables exist and give a better game than a cramped full-size one.
- [Use a conversion top](/ping-pong-tables/best-conversion-tops) over a table you already own, so the floor is only committed when you are playing.

What to buy at each answer

#1 · Rooms that fail the clearance test
JOOLA Tetra 4-Piece Ping Pong Conversion Top
Four panels that turn a pool table into a table tennis table and stack behind a door afterwards. The storage story is the product.
If the room will not take a permanent table, a conversion top over an existing table is the realistic answer.
- What works
- Stores flat
- Costs far less than a table
- What does not
- Does not reduce the room you need to play in

#2 · Rooms that pass
STIGA Advantage Indoor Table Tennis Table
The default family table: a full-size folding indoor table with STIGA's Quickplay assembly, aimed at first-time buyers.
If you have 17 by 10 feet, buy a real table. Everything else is a compromise around not having it.
- What works
- Full-size regulation surface
- What does not
- Needs the room and the storage corner
Sources and method
Table dimensions are the ITTF standard. Room figures are the conventional clearance bands used for recreational, club and competition play; the home numbers are arithmetic from the end and side allowances shown, which you can repeat for your own room.
