A home game room with a billiard table and a dart board visible along the wall

There is no single best game room table, because the games are not substitutes for each other and the rooms are not the same shape. What this page does is pick one table per category and state, up front, the clear room each one needs - so you can rule things out before you read about them.

Start here: what your room allows

If you are building a room from scratch

Buy in this order, because each one changes what the next can be:

  1. The table that needs the most room, if you are having one. That is pool, and its clearance rectangle defines everything else in the room.
  2. The dart board, because it costs you a wall and no floor. There is almost never a reason not to.
  3. The long, narrow table - shuffleboard - along a wall the first table does not need.
  4. Lighting, before the seating. A room lit only by a table light is uncomfortable to be in. Lighting plan here.
  5. Flooring, ideally before anything heavy arrives. Options here.
  6. Seating, last, in whatever space is left outside the cue clearance.

What this list deliberately does not do

  • No scores or ratings. We have not played on these tables and will not publish a number implying that we have.
  • No prices on the page. Prices change daily; every button goes to the live listing where the current figure is whatever Amazon says at that moment.
  • No testimonials. There are none to quote, and inventing them is not an option.
  • No single winner. A dart board and a pool table are not competing for the same purchase.

How these were chosen

Each category's pick comes from that category's own roundup on this site, which works from published dimensions, construction specifications and governing-body standards against the clearance arithmetic. Follow the links in each section for the full reasoning and the alternatives.

Questions people actually ask

What is the best table for a game room?
The largest one your room can take with full clearance. For most homes that is a 7-foot pool table if you have about 17 by 14 feet, and a 12-foot shuffleboard plus a dart board if you do not.
What game room table needs the least space?
A dart board - 11 feet of floor run and 5 feet 8 inches of wall, with no width requirement to speak of. After that, bumper pool at around 9 by 9 feet.
Can I have more than one game in a room?
Usually yes, because only pool needs clearance on all four sides. A shuffleboard along a wall and a dart board on another cost almost nothing in floor area and fit alongside most other tables.
What should I buy first for a game room?
Whatever needs the most clearance, because its rectangle defines the room. Then the dart board, which costs a wall and no floor. Then lighting and flooring, before the seating.
Are expensive game room tables worth it?
The money buys durability and, on a few specific specs, how the game plays - a thicker ping pong top, a 120-volt air hockey blower, denser dart board sisal. It never buys you room you do not have, which is the constraint that actually decides most purchases.
